Very few
orchids have changed the course of orchid history or had such an impact
that the flowering of almost every single one of its hybrids became an
event. Phal. Golden
Peoker ‘Ever-spring’, JC/AOS is just such an orchid. Let us examine
the history of this plant.
When I first
went to Taiwan in 1994, I saw Phal. Ever-Spring King 'Panda'. It
was incredible (The literal meaning of incredible is beyond belief . . .
and it was!) This was the first hybrid of Phal. Golden Peoker
'Ever-spring', JC/AOS that I had ever seen. The next year, 'Panda'
was available to be purchased. The meristems
had just been deflasked and, although they were small, they were NOT cheap. I purchased three
plants.
In 1994 and
1995, I visited many nurseries in Taiwan. Phal. Golden Peoker
'Brother', AM/AOS is probably (or was then) the most meristemmed plant
that I saw. (And let's not forget that, in Taiwan, most plants are
mericlones and not hybrid seedlings.) I saw literally thousands of
mericlones. The plant is floriferous, has good-sized flowers with
good color. All this made it ideal to mericlone. And, of
course, with all this mericloning going on, mutation occurred. Phal. Golden Peoker
'Ever-spring', JC/AOS was one of the first - and one of the most
striking - mutations to be found and was quickly bred with and
mericloned. We did see other mutated mericlones but they were not
available for sale - not at any price.
There are
different versions of the story concerning the origin of the other
awarded mutated clones of Phal. Golden Peoker. One version is that
they are the result of a selfing. The other is that they are the
result of further mericloning. Choose the version that you
prefer. In any case, there are three other clones of Phal. Golden
Peoker that have received AOS recognition: 'S.J.', HCC/AOS;
'Nan Cho', AM/AOS; and 'B.L.', HCC/AOS
In 1995,
more Phal. Golden Peoker seedlings had bloomed and Phal. Ever-Spring King 'Lee', JC/AOS was
then available as was Phal. Golden Peoker 'Ever-spring', JC/AOS.
Since then, Phal. Ever-spring Light and Dtps. Ever-Spring Prince
have bloomed. What many people do not realize is that Phal. Golden
Peoker 'Ever-spring', JC/AOS is the parent of both Phal. Ever-Spring
King and Phal. Ever-Spring Light. But Phal. Golden Peoker 'B.L.',
HCC/AOS is the parent of Dtps. Ever-Spring Prince.
In 1998, Phal.
Ever-Spring Fairy 'Shan Pin' was awarded an FCC.
Other hybrids
are being made with almost anything that will breed. The future
will be very interesting. But there are serious fertility problems
with several of the offspring. However, we can still enjoy
them. Here we offer you our first pictorial essay. Enjoy!

Orchid World
(monthly) is a Taiwanese magazine. It is mainly a pictorial and
has pictures of many of the winning plants (ribbon winners) from the
local Taiwanese orchid shows. Since orchid names are written in English, it is
easy to identify plants (despite the odd mis-spellings). In the
spring, there are many pictures of phalaenopsis but, for the rest of the
year, these photos are few and far between. There are photos of
cattleyas and paphiopedilums and an assortment of other orchids. A subscription is US $120 per
year. In order to subscribe, simply send US $120 to:
